Foil vs Rotary vs Multi-Blade Head Shavers: Which Type Is Best?

Shopping for a head shaver, you'll run into three designs: foil, rotary and the newer multi-blade floating heads. They all get you smooth, but they feel different, handle scalp contours differently, and land at different points on the closeness-vs-comfort scale. Here's how to pick.

Foil shavers

A foil shaver uses one or more oscillating blades hidden behind a thin perforated screen (the foil). The foil flattens against your skin and the blades cut the hair that pokes through the holes. Foils give a very close, precise shave and are excellent for straight edges. The downside on a curved scalp is that a flat foil doesn't always follow the contours of your skull, so you work a little harder around the crown and back.

Rotary shavers

Rotary shavers use spinning circular blades — usually three or four heads that pivot independently. That pivoting is the key advantage on a head: the heads flex to follow the round shape of your skull, which makes them comfortable and forgiving for freehand shaving. Classic head-shaver brands built the category on this design. The trade-off is that older 3- and 4-head rotaries cover a smaller area per pass, so an even finish takes more strokes.

Multi-blade floating heads (the modern option)

The newest category takes the pivoting comfort of a rotary and multiplies the coverage — 5, 6 or even 7 floating blades arranged across a single head that all contact the scalp at once.
